How to critique a web design as a client so that your web designer knows how to proceed?

How can you work with your web designer during the design process so that your desired website can go live within a short time and start generating leads for you?

We find that some of our clients struggle with this and inadvertently cause delays in the completion of the website. They will tell us that this needs to change or simply I don’t like that but would not be able to elaborate the reason for us.

We even have had the unfortunate encounter with a client which we couldn’t complete the project because he would change his mind every time we meet. We would “nail down” his requirements and the design direction and then the next time we meet him to show him the work, he would say that is not what he wanted although there was clear documentations. We spent so much time trying to make it work that we would have built an equivalent of 4-5 websites by the time we called it quits and chose to stop working for him, but thankfully we parted ways amicably.

Clear Communication between client and designer is such a key part of this business and we have learnt so much in the last 10 years.

Here are some of the pointers we would like to give anyone who is engaging a web designer:

  • Please over communicate your expectations and always explain plainly what you like or dislike about a certain design aspect.
  • Don’t approach the website solely based on your point of view but think like your target customer and seek to understand the UI/UX principles that your designer is using to organise the information and touch points. You can ask them for the reason why certain things are done and they can explain it to you.
  • You are the expert in your field, but your designer is the expert in their field too. What you know about your field may need to be presented differently on the web platform for it to be effectively communicated to the target audience.
  • Always stay focused on the big picture and don’t get stuck on the nitty gritty, those can be sorted out later. The important thing is for the website to go live. There is no such thing as a perfect website!
  • Your designer can’t invent all the content for you, you need to give them quality content if you want to see quality content on your website! Once I had a client who wanted me to build the company’s Sustainability page for him but did not give me any policies or content to work with, he actually asked me to copy it from his competitor’s website but I refused! We craft content for clients all the time but we cannot invent ESG policies and implementations.

Lastly, know that it is a partnership between the designer and his or her client and the end product is actually a joint product! It is not us vs them but we!
